World Environment Day

Spread the love

World Environment Day is celebrated every year
on the 5th of June and aims at raising awareness and celebrating environmental
action

This year’s campaign is celebrated under the theme #OnlyOneEarth, focusing on living sustainably in harmony with nature. It highlights the need to reset the balance with nature through transformative changes. According to the UNEP, “it calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.”

So, why do we need World Environment Day and why is it important to take care of the earth? That’s simple of course! We need to ensure that a sustainable model is adopted worldwide to ensure the long-term future of our species, which is of course of utmost paramount importance for humans all over the world. This is an issue that unifies and sometimes a very divided race of people, so it should be embraced wholeheartedly not just for our planet, but for us too. This is why it’s essential to have a central forum and an annual focus on the primary issues for people to connect and discuss their ideas.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 percent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues, making “Only One Earth” and its focus on living sustainably in harmony with nature, as pertinent as ever.

Issues Pakistan is facing

Pakistan is facing a lot of climatic and environmental issues, including Water pollution, soil erosion, energy crisis, land pollution, shortage of water, global warming, air pollution, and natural disasters.

The constant growth in the population is another massive challenge. With the passage of time, the country is growing economically but definitely, it needs to shed light on the environmental factors.

Pakistan has been declared among the top ten countries most affected by climate change. Climate change is negatively impacting the health, agriculture, and overall economy of the country. The main reasons are carbon emission, deforestation, population explosion, and lack of finances to mitigate and adapt to climate change effects.

Making a sustainable living the default option

Truly transformative options for sustainability need to be available, affordable, and attractive for people to make better daily decisions. Key areas for transformation include how we build and live in our homes, cities, and places of work and worship, how and where our money is invested, and what we do for fun. But others of greater magnitude also include energy, production systems, global trade, and transport systems, and protection of biodiversity.
