Chinese smartphone camera photographs Earth from space

Chinese electronics firm Xiaomi went above and beyond to advertise its latest smartphone, sending the device’s 100-megapixel camera into space. The camera, which is based on the 108-megapixel Xiaomi M10 Pro quad camera, was integrated into a cubesat that launched in November 2019. Xiaomi used the quite brilliant orbital imagery for the Chinese launch of its new Mi 10 smartphones on Feb.13.  The Xiaomi images show Earth from an altitude of around 307 miles (495 kilometers), where the Chinese-made cubesat travels at close to 17,450 mph (28,080 km/h). Visible in one image is the…

Hybrid Nuclear-Renewable Energy Systems

Some countries have changes their nuclear policy to either to phase-out or phase-down after Fukushima incident due to safety concerns. However, many of the countries are still continuing to develop nuclear power plants with no better substitute for nuclear energy. [1] Renewable energy, known to be more safe than nuclear energy, is extensively being researched, but it still has long way to go in order to completely occupy the energy production market. Hybrid nuclear-renewable energy systems are being proposed as the next generation energy plant trying to reap only the…

Wind and Solar Power Will Soon Be Cheaper Than Coal Globally, New Research Shows

The new research, released today, shows that nearly $640 billion of investment in coal power capacity worldwide is at risk because it is less expensive to generate electricity from wind and solar power, as Reuters reported. The report also found that more than 60 percent of global coal power plants are generating electricity at a higher cost than it could be produced by building new renewables. The researchers found that by 2030, at the latest, it will be cheaper to build new wind or solar capacity than continue operating with coal, according to…

Govt may call in third-party auditors to settle dispute over circular debt size

ISLAMABAD: The government is considering hiring international third-party auditors to end an ongoing controversy between the Power Division and the regulator over the size of circular debt. Nuclear power in a clean energy system

The International Energy Agency (IEA)  says wind and solar energy need to play a much greater role in order for countries to meet sustainability goals, but it is extremely difficult to envisage them doing so without help from nuclear power. Nuclear power today makes a significant contribution to electricity generation, providing 10% of global electricity supply in 2018. In advanced economies, nuclear power accounts for 18% of generation and is the largest low-carbon source of electricity. However, its share of global electricity supply has been declining in recent years. The IEA’s…
