KARACHI – Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has urged private sector stakeholders to actively participate in the province’s upcoming electric vehicle (EV) taxi service initiative, aimed at providing eco-friendly and comfortable transport solutions across Sindh.

Speaking at a high-level meeting, Memon revealed that the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF), under the Investment Department, is offering Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR)-based subsidies to companies keen on launching EV taxi fleets under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Highlighting the global shift toward electric mobility, Memon stated that the initiative will not only reduce the province’s carbon footprint but also modernize its urban transport infrastructure. A key feature of the project is the planned launch of a dedicated EV pink taxi service exclusively for women, with both drivers and passengers being female—an effort to promote women’s empowerment and safe travel.

The project is also expected to generate significant employment, with each taxi operated by at least two trained drivers, subject to character verification and police clearance.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment, Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, outlined the government’s incentives for interested investors, while Transport Secretary Asad Zamin provided updates on infrastructure readiness.

In the first phase, 100 electric taxis will be deployed, with support from Sindh Bank, SEDF, and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority. Memon also emphasized that the new service would offer a sustainable alternative to the problematic Qingqi rickshaws currently dominating the streets.

Banks, investors, and operators are encouraged to submit proposals promptly to be part of this transformative green mobility project.
