ISLAMABAD: In a significant move towards energy sector reform and fiscal optimization, the second phase of the auction for state-owned, non-operational power plants is set to take place today (Monday) in Islamabad.

According to an official press release, three major thermal power plants with a combined generation capacity of 2,362 megawatts will be auctioned. These include the Thermal Power Station Jamshoro (880 MW), Thermal Power Station Muzaffargarh (1,350 MW), and Steam Power Station Faisalabad (132 MW). The collective reserve price for these assets has been set at Rs26.62 billion.

The auction is being held at the GENCO Holding Company Limited office from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is conducted with full transparency under the directives of the Prime Minister, Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), and Ministry of Energy (Power Division).

This initiative follows the successful first phase, where seven outdated thermal plants were sold for a total of Rs9 billion—exceeding their reserve prices. Officials emphasize that this second phase will not only aid in better financial resource utilization but also attract fresh investment into the energy sector. Media, investors, and stakeholders have been invited to witness the proceedings and ensure openness in the process.
