ISLAMABAD – May 24, 2025: In a major milestone for Pakistan’s water and energy sector, the construction of the Main Dam at the Mohmand Dam Project has officially commenced. This achievement follows the successful completion of key preparatory works including river diversion, coffer dams, excavation of abutments, and foundation work. The project is expected to be completed by 2027-28.
To mark the occasion, Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo visited the project site, accompanied by Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), the project’s General Manager/Project Director, and representatives of consultants and contractors.
The Minister toured key components of the site including the *Diversion System, **Power Intake Tunnel, **Main Dam, **Spillway, and **Power House. During the visit, he was briefed on the progress across *14 active construction sites, expressing satisfaction with the pace and quality of work.
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing Pakistan’s growing water and energy needs. He praised WAPDA and the Ministry of Water Resources for their efforts on mega infrastructure projects like Mohmand Dam, which will play a crucial role in ensuring water security and affordable power supply.
Located across the Swat River in *Mohmand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the *213-meter-high Mohmand Dam will be the fifth-highest concrete-faced rock-fill dam (CFRD) in the world. It will have a *gross storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF), enabling irrigation of *18,233 acres of new land and supplementing water for 160,000 acres of existing farmland.
With an *installed power generation capacity of 800 MW, the dam will contribute *2.86 billion units of clean, green hydel electricity annually to the national grid. Additionally, the project will help mitigate flooding risks in *Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera, and supply *300 million gallons of drinking water per day to Peshawar.
The Federal Minister assured full government support to ensure the timely completion of Mohmand Dam and other strategic projects aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s water and energy infrastructure.
