Sindh Lawmakers Slam KE Over Load Shedding, CEO Monis Alvi Grilled

KARACHI (Staff Reporter) – In a heated session of the Sindh Assembly’s Special Committee on Energy, members strongly criticized prolonged load shedding across the province and expressed frustration over the non-serious attitude of K-Electric CEO Monis Alvi. The performance of K-Electric and other power distribution companies came under sharp scrutiny, with lawmakers voicing anger over their inefficiency.

Monis Alvi apologized for his absence in the previous meeting. However, tensions rose when committee members demanded to know under which laws K-Electric carries out load shedding. The CEO claimed it was due to line losses, but failed to cite any legal basis for the action. Lawmakers rejected the explanation, insisting on a legal justification, which Alvi could not provide. He also admitted to K-Electric’s failure in curbing electricity theft.

The committee directed all power distribution companies to prepare a detailed load shedding schedule within the next ten days and take urgent steps to provide relief to the public. They were also instructed to stop unannounced load shedding during nighttime hours and control electricity theft. Failure to comply will lead to legal action against the companies.

The meeting, chaired by PPP MPA Fayaz Butt, was held at the Sindh Assembly building. Speaker Awais Qadir Shah attended the session as a special participant. Other attendees included PPP’s Ghulam Qadir Chandio, Asif Musa, Sadia Javed; MQM-P’s Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi, Moazz Mehboob, Aamir Siddiqui, Shariq Jamal, Balqees Mukhtar; and Jamaat-e-Islami’s Muhammad Farooq, among others.
