LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched the “Waste to Value” project under the Suthra Punjab Programme, marking a transformative step in sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation in the province.
Chairing a detailed briefing session on the Lahore Waste Management Company’s (LWMC) biogas-from-waste initiative, CM Maryam announced the success of Punjab’s first-ever experiment to produce biogas from biodegradable animal waste at Lakhodair, Lahore.
She directed officials to expedite the project rollout, highlighting its potential to convert 1,000 metric tons of waste into 20,000–25,000 kg of gas, generating Rs 6–7 million in revenue from sacrificial animal waste alone.
Officials also informed that rehabilitating the Lakhodair disposal site will yield 275,000 tons of carbon credits, translating to an annual income of \$4.2 million. A 50 MW waste-to-energy plant is also on the cards, capable of converting 3,000 tons of solid waste into electricity daily, with \$2.5 million in revenue expected over 10 years from gas extracted at the landfill.
The CM reviewed plans for a recycling park projected to earn Rs 190 million annually, and a Waste to Value Incubation Center to support green startups through technical guidance, seed funding, and R\&D opportunities. Maryam Nawaz praised LWMC’s efforts in pioneering low-cost, high-impact biogas solutions.
On World Hepatitis Day, the CM also issued a public health message, calling hepatitis a “silent killer” and emphasized early diagnosis and vaccination. She noted that free testing, home delivery of medicines, and awareness campaigns are underway as part of the government’s commitment to a “Healthy Punjab, Developed Punjab.”
