ISLAMABAD: More than one million electricity consumers across Pakistan have adopted the government’s self-meter reading initiative, “Apna Meter Apni Reading,” marking a significant step towards tackling overbilling and improving billing accuracy.
Launched via the Power Smart app, the programme enables consumers to submit their own meter readings by uploading photos, reducing errors, delays, and disputes. This digital tool, championed by Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, aims to put consumers at the centre of billing reforms and strengthen trust between the public and utility providers.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the initiative has contributed to a reduction in sector losses — from Rs591 billion in June 2024 to Rs400 billion — saving Rs191 billion in just one year. The strong adoption rate reflects growing public confidence in digital governance and the ministry’s commitment to service improvement.
The federal minister has declared the coming year as one focused on enhanced consumer satisfaction and operational efficiency within the electricity sector.
