ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thar Coal Block-1 Power Generation Company, Sino Sindh Resources, and Shanghai Electric Engineering Consulting Company to enhance the skills of Pakistani engineers through training, exchange, and scholarships under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The five-year collaboration will train 100 fresh graduates through annual six-week programmes at Thar, combining classroom instruction with hands-on experience in power plant and mining operations. Additionally, 5–10 engineers will be sent to China each year for advanced short-term training in modern energy technologies.
The initiative also includes an annual scholarship fund of Rs3.5 million to support 35 deserving students—totaling 175 beneficiaries over five years—with opportunities for higher education in China. To bridge communication gaps, Chinese language courses will be offered to up to 50 participants.
PEC emphasized inclusivity by encouraging women and students from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply.
Speaking at the signing, PEC Chairman Engr Waseem Nazir said the programme reflects the council’s commitment to equipping young engineers with practical skills, international exposure, and language training, adding that it will open new career pathways while strengthening Pakistan’s energy and industrial capacity.
