ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed a six-year Country Programme Framework (CPF) to expand cooperation in peaceful nuclear applications, covering food security, energy, healthcare, climate resilience, and safety.
The agreement, signed in Vienna on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference, was inked by Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), and Hua Liu, IAEA Deputy Director General for Technical Cooperation. The CPF (2026–2031) is Pakistan’s fifth framework with the agency and spans three IAEA technical cooperation cycles.
Key priority areas include nuclear techniques for agriculture, expanded cancer treatment through 20 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals, isotope hydrology for water resource management, and safe operation of nuclear power plants that already contribute over 18% to Pakistan’s electricity mix.
Dr. Anwar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to “harnessing nuclear science for food security, improved healthcare, energy sustainability, and environmental protection,” while Liu described the pact as a “shared vision for sustainable development through peaceful nuclear cooperation.”
