ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday signed a historic Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement, pledging that any aggression against either country would be considered aggression against both, according to a joint statement issued in Riyadh.
The agreement was signed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to the Kingdom at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
“Building on the historic partnership extending nearly eight decades, and rooted in bonds of brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and shared strategic interests, both leaders signed the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement,” the statement said. It added that the pact reflects a shared commitment to regional and global peace, strengthened deterrence, and deeper defense cooperation.
While Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have long-standing defense ties, the new pact is seen as a milestone in bilateral relations, particularly amid heightened regional tensions. A Saudi official, however, clarified to Reuters that the deal was not aimed at any specific event, but rather underscored the enduring strategic cooperation between the two allies.
For decades, Pakistani military personnel have trained Saudi forces, while Riyadh has consistently provided Islamabad with generous financial support during economic crises. The latest agreement reaffirms this partnership at a time when both nations face evolving security challenges.
The signing ceremony was marked by rare gestures of solidarity. As Prime Minister Shehbaz’s plane entered Saudi airspace, it was escorted by Saudi Air Force jets. He was later received by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh, accompanied by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Both delegations held official talks, reviewing historic ties and discussing matters of mutual interest. Shehbaz conveyed warm greetings to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, expressing gratitude for the Kingdom’s hospitality and extending best wishes for the progress and prosperity of the Saudi people.
In return, the Crown Prince wished Pakistan stability, prosperity, and continued success.
The landmark defense pact not only cements Islamabad-Riyadh ties at political and security levels but also signals a new era of cooperation, with both sides continuing to explore expanded economic engagement alongside defense collaboration.
