PESHAWAR: Three major hydropower projects under the supervision of the Provincial Energy Development Organization (PEDO) are expected to start generating a combined 330 megawatts (MW) of electricity within the next two years, significantly boosting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s power generation capacity.

This was revealed by Secretary Energy and Power Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mohammad Zubair Khan during his visit to the under-construction sites, accompanied by PEDO Chief Executive Officer Habibullah and Deputy Commissioner Swat Saleem Jan.

The ongoing projects include the 84MW Gorkin Matiltan Hydropower Project, the 88MW Gabral Kalam Project, and the 36.6MW Daral Khwar Hydropower Plant, which had been affected by recent floods. Work is also progressing on a 40-kilometre-long 132/220kV transmission line along the Swat corridor, expected to be completed next year.

Secretary Zubair Khan said that the completion of these projects would enable the province to supply low-cost electricity to its industrial sector, promoting economic growth and employment. He directed project officials to accelerate construction and ensure timely completion while addressing public complaints related to water supply and other community concerns.

During the visit, employees of the Gorkin Matiltan project raised the issue of pending salaries, prompting the secretary to order immediate disbursement of arrears. He also inspected the Gabral Kalam staff colony, instructing authorities to expedite construction, and reviewed rehabilitation work at the flood-affected Daral Khwar plant in Bahrain.

The secretary further directed the Assistant Commissioner of Bahrain to resolve local issues hindering progress, ensuring smooth continuation of construction activities across all project sites.
