KARACHI: Responding to mounting public and political pressure, the Sindh government has decided to significantly reduce fines under its recently introduced AI-based e-ticketing system, “Tracs.”
The automated system, launched only weeks ago, came under fire after traffic police issued nearly 30,000 challans in a short span, sparking criticism over what many called “excessive and revenue-driven” penalties. Officials now plan to rationalize the fine structure to ease public resentment while affirming that the system itself will continue to function.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, defended the initiative, describing it as a key step toward improving road safety and driver discipline. However, he acknowledged that its success depends on better coordination with municipal and transport authorities.
The Sindh government is expected to formally announce the revised fines by the end of this month. Authorities have also pledged to resolve citizens’ complaints, particularly cases where tickets were issued to vehicles no longer in their possession.
