Karachi Mayor Inaugurates EV Charging Station, Highlights Progress on Key City Initiatives

KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday inaugurated the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation’s (KWSC) first electric vehicle (EV) charging station, alongside the launch of new suction machines and the corporation’s first police station. He said the city administration, following the Pakistan Peoples Party’s manifesto, is advancing three major initiatives aimed at improving urban services and overall city management.

Speaking at the ceremony held at KWSC Headquarters, Wahab said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has provided a clear vision for Karachi—one that prioritizes focused development, citizen engagement, and unity over division.

The newly established EV charging station will allow Water Corporation employees to charge their vehicles on-site. Wahab noted that KMC’s electric vehicle policy has yielded positive results, prompting its expansion to other city institutions, including KWSC.

Addressing recent confusion over municipal tax collection, the mayor clarified that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) does not receive taxes from cantonment board areas, nor was K-Electric (KE) instructed to collect such taxes on its behalf. He said a technical error had occurred but has since been fully rectified, and “not a single rupee” from cantonment areas is being transferred to KMC.

Wahab added that within KMC’s actual jurisdiction, KE has collected municipal utility charges, transferring Rs373 million to KMC in October alone—of which Rs90 million was allocated to electricity bills. He said the policy has successfully prevented revenue leakage and improved the corporation’s financial stability.
