KARACHI: Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), Lt Gen (Retd) Muhammad Saeed, has reaffirmed that the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme — commonly known as the K-IV project — is on track for completion in 2026, subject to timely availability of funds.
During a two-day visit, the chairman inspected major construction sites, including the intake structure and pumping stations at Keenjhar Lake, the high-pressure water conveyance pipelines leading to Karachi, and one of the city’s filtration plants.
Project officials, contractors and consultants briefed him on contract-wise progress and key milestones. The K-IV project has been divided into eight contract packages to accelerate completion, with construction currently underway across all major sites. The scheme has achieved 64% physical progress with expenditures reaching Rs86 billion.
A Wapda statement reiterated the authority’s commitment to delivering the project within the revised timeline. However, it noted that upcoming funding requirements must be met to maintain momentum.
Highlighting the project’s critical importance for Karachi’s growing water needs, the chairman urged contractors to accelerate work and deploy additional resources. He specifically called for improved progress on pipeline-2, where construction performance is lagging behind schedule.
He also instructed the project team to maintain close coordination with the Sindh government to ensure smooth and uninterrupted implementation of the vital water supply scheme.
