Islamabad: In a landmark step toward national energy reform, Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari formally launched the Prime Minister’s Fan Replacement Program at the Planning Commission Auditorium in Islamabad.
The initiative, spearheaded by the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), is being described as one of the most transformative demand-side management interventions in Pakistan’s history. Far beyond a technical upgrade, the program marks a strategic shift toward embedding energy efficiency at the core of the country’s power policy.
The launch ceremony was attended by Dr. Musadik Malik, Federal Minister for Climate Change; Dr. Muhammad Fakhre Alam Irfan, Federal Secretary for Energy (Power Division); Mr. Humayun Khan, Managing Director NEECA; senior government officials; distribution companies; banking partners; development institutions; and media representatives. Their participation reflected strong institutional alignment and collective commitment to actionable reform.
Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, officials noted that nearly 70 percent of additional electricity consumption during summer months comes from ceiling fans. Under the PM Fan Replacement Program, outdated and electricity-intensive fans will be replaced with energy-efficient models, enabling households to save an estimated Rs. 10,000 to 12,000 annually per fan.
At the national level, the projected reduction in electricity demand is equivalent to the output of several large power plants — achieved without constructing new generation facilities. The initiative is expected to ease pressure on the grid, reduce load shedding, lower consumer bills, and cut carbon emissions.
Energy experts view the program as a breakthrough in demand-side management and a practical demonstration of how policy continuity, stakeholder engagement, and institutional leadership can deliver measurable results.
With implementation now underway, the PM Fan Replacement Program signals a decisive move toward a more sustainable, affordable, and efficient power future for Pakistan.
