Karachi, February 24, 2026 The Humaara Karachi Movement, led by architect Dr Yasmeen Lari, formally launched its citywide citizen initiative with a Street Assembly at Denso Hall Rahguzar Walking Street, Karachi.
The initiative follows the recent Gul Plaza tragedy and marks the beginning of a structured, zero funding, non political effort to improve fire safety standards and civic responsibility across Karachi.
Organised by the Humaara Karachi Core Committee in collaboration with the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan, the Institute of Architects Pakistan and the Association of Consulting Engineers Pakistan, the assembly focused on fire protection arrangements for Rahguzar buildings and the adjoining medicine market.
The programme commenced with a live fire drill demonstration at 11:30 am, followed by a recitation from the Holy Quran, welcome remarks and a detailed technical presentation.
Eminent senior engineer Engr Farooq Mehboob delivered a comprehensive presentation on fire related hazards in the medicine market. His findings were based on detailed surveys of buildings in the area and direct discussions with building owners. He identified structural vulnerabilities, blocked access points, electrical risks and the absence of coordinated evacuation planning.
Clear and implementable recommendations were presented, including improved emergency access, mandatory fire detection systems, designated escape routes, rooftop access planning, electrical load management, installation of fire extinguishers and hydrant systems, and coordinated drills for occupants and traders.
A question and answer session enabled residents, shop owners and professionals to engage directly with technical experts and7 discuss practical next steps.

Humaara Karachi is a citizen driven platform that prioritises prevention, compliance and collective responsibility. The movement will continue to hold structured assemblies, technical reviews and awareness sessions across high risk commercial zones in the city.
