Islamabad: Pakistan has invited Turkish companies to participate in the privatisation of its electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability in the power sector.

The invitation was extended during a virtual meeting between Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari and Türkiye’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, where both sides discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

During the meeting, Leghari briefed his Turkish counterpart on Pakistan’s comprehensive power sector reforms designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve governance, and strengthen service delivery across the electricity distribution network.

He explained that the government is actively pursuing the privatisation of state-owned power distribution companies (DISCOs) as part of a broader strategy to ensure long-term financial sustainability and improved performance in the energy sector.

The minister emphasised that the privatisation process is being carried out through a transparent, competitive, and well-structured framework, aimed at attracting credible international investors with proven expertise in power sector management.

Leghari noted that Turkish companies, given their strong track record and extensive experience in the energy sector, could play a significant role in the successful restructuring and management of Pakistan’s distribution companies.

He also appreciated the continued engagement between relevant institutions and technical experts from both countries and thanked the government of Türkiye for its support and cooperation in strengthening energy sector collaboration.

In response, Bayraktar said Turkish investors are closely monitoring developments in Pakistan’s power sector and have shown considerable interest in the privatisation initiative. He expressed confidence that Turkish companies would actively explore the emerging opportunities and participate in the process at an appropriate level.

The discussions reflect growing Pakistan–Türkiye energy cooperation, with both countries seeking to expand collaboration in areas such as electricity distribution, power generation, and energy infrastructure development.
