ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has outlined the government’s future power generation roadmap, aimed at building a sustainable, transparent, and modern energy system to address current sectoral challenges.

He shared the plans during a meeting with a delegation of the German development agency (GIZ) led by Deputy Head of Mission Arno Kirchhof. Discussions focused on ongoing cooperation under the €7 million “Decarbonization and Digitization of Power Distribution Network” program, launched in 2024 and set to continue until 2026.

The initiative provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Energy through four core components: regulatory support, renewable energy integration, pilot projects, and knowledge-sharing. It also includes digitization of feeders in PESCO and LESCO. In addition, GIZ has approved an extra €2.5 million grant for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) pilot project and business model.

Leghari emphasized that modernising the power sector through digitization, green energy transition, and research and development is essential for Pakistan to achieve its sustainable development goals. He also underscored the importance of aligning future policies with advanced technologies.

Appreciating GIZ’s support, the minister said Pakistan values cooperation with international partners to strengthen reforms, capacity building, and policy frameworks. The German delegation praised Pakistan’s reform measures and reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration for a greener, more efficient energy sector.
