ISLAMABAD: The United States has approached Pakistan to explore the sale of American locomotives and deepen cooperation in mineral exploration and extraction, government sources revealed.

The discussions took place during Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb’s visit to Washington on the sidelines of the IMF annual meetings in October. US officials expressed interest in supplying locomotives to Pakistan Railways and offered collaboration on assessment studies to determine Pakistan’s mineral reserves, followed by fast-tracked extraction agreements.

Sources said US officials also sought favourable consideration of Starlink’s licence to provide high-speed internet in remote areas. Cooperation in critical minerals emerged as a key focus, with US representatives highlighting Washington’s strategic priority to secure global mineral supply chains.

The talks also covered digital finance, energy, and private-sector investment, reflecting growing US interest in expanding economic engagement with Pakistan.
