Karachi, 9th March 2026 — The Karachi Port Trust (KPT), in coordination with its private container terminals, has taken a significant step to alleviate port congestion by waiving demurrage charges on auctionable and auctioned containers, provided they are cleared within seven days of auction.
The decision was reached following constructive engagement between KPT and the private terminal operators, reflecting a collaborative approach to improving operational efficiency at the port.
The initiative is expected to facilitate Pakistan Customs in expediting the clearance of long-pending containers while providing relief to the trade and logistics sector. By accelerating the disposal and clearance of auctionable cargo, the measure will help reduce congestion caused by accumulated containers at the port.
Additionally, the move is aimed at creating much-needed space to accommodate the growing volume of transshipment cargo being routed through Karachi in light of the ongoing maritime disruptions in the Middle East.
This waiver of demurrage charges underscores KPT’s proactive commitment to improving port operations, supporting the national trade ecosystem, and ensuring Karachi Port remains a reliable and efficient maritime gateway for regional and international shipping.
