LESCO Accelerates Smart Meter Rollout to Modernise Power Distribution

New-LESCO

LAHORE: Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has stepped up efforts to modernise its electricity distribution system by initiating the rollout of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters, aiming to enhance transparency, efficiency, and consumer service.

According to officials, traditional static meters are being gradually replaced with single-phase AMI smart meters, priced at Rs11,665 per unit. While conventional meters procured during FY2024–25 cost around Rs4,500, authorities emphasised that a direct comparison is not appropriate due to the advanced features and capabilities offered by AMI technology.

Previously, consumers had to purchase smart meters privately at prices exceeding Rs20,000. Through a competitive and transparent tendering process, LESCO has significantly reduced costs, providing notable relief to users.

The utility is offering a complete package that includes the smart meter and up to 10 meters of service cable, bringing the total estimated cost to around Rs17,700. Additional charges will apply if cable requirements exceed the standard length.

The initiative reflects LESCO’s broader strategy to adopt modern technologies, reduce losses, and provide consumers with accurate, real-time energy monitoring—paving the way for a more efficient and digitised power sector in Pakistan.
