KARACHI: Rainfall began across Karachi and surrounding areas on Thursday as a strong westerly weather system moved into the region, prompting authorities to declare a rain emergency across the city.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, showers were recorded in multiple areas including Quaidabad, Malir, PAF Faisal Base, and Jinnah Terminal early in the day. Light rain was also observed in Gulshan-i-Maymar, while heavier spells hit Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Saddar, Clifton, Garden, and Keamari. Weather radar indicated intense rainfall over northern parts of the city, with isolated hailstorms reported.
The Met Office forecast a maximum temperature between 25°C and 27°C, with conditions expected to remain cloudy, accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, and intermittent heavy rain in parts of the city.
In response, the city administration declared a rain emergency. Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi confirmed that all relevant departments had been mobilized, and citizens were advised to contact the rescue helpline 1299 for assistance.
Field operations have been intensified, with staff from municipal bodies, including water and solid waste management teams, deployed under the supervision of assistant commissioners. Drainage work is underway in low-lying areas to clear accumulated rainwater and maintain traffic flow.
Emergency camps and help desks have been established across various districts, including District East (Nepa Chowrangi, National Stadium, Safoora Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth), District South (MA Jinnah Road, Shaheen Complex, Lyari), Keamari (Baldia Town, Mauripur Truck Stand), and District Central (Ayesha Manzil and surrounding areas).
The Government of Sindh has urged citizens to exercise caution. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that leaves of essential staff had been cancelled and additional de-watering pumps installed at key نقاط to ensure swift drainage.
Authorities have also identified critical choking points across the city, with monitoring teams deployed to prevent urban flooding. Officials remain on high alert, with instructions to stay in the field and respond promptly to emergencies.
Residents have been advised to follow safety precautions during the ongoing weather conditions and report any emergencies to the relevant departments immediately.
