ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Pakistan, highlighting their potential to reduce fuel imports and conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves amid rising global oil prices.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the provision of eco-smart EVs to the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police, the prime minister emphasised that such energy-efficient initiatives should be replicated by all provinces and law enforcement agencies.

He noted that the Ministry of Interior had provided an initial fleet of 15 electric vehicles, which operate entirely on battery power without relying on petrol or diesel. He added that additional EVs would be inducted in the coming phases.

Describing the move as a significant step, Shehbaz Sharif said the transition to EVs would not only reduce fuel consumption but also have a positive impact on the country’s foreign reserves.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader energy-saving strategy, aimed at promoting cleaner and more sustainable transport solutions. Officials noted that groundwork on fuel economy and EV policies had already begun prior to the current regional challenges, facilitating the rollout of such projects.

The prime minister reiterated that accelerating the shift to electric mobility is essential for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and strengthening Pakistan’s economic resilience.
