PESHAWAR: Mohammad Sohail Afridi has directed relevant departments to explore the feasibility of establishing an electric bike and scooter manufacturing industry in the province, underscoring the government’s commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability.
The directive came during a high-level meeting of the Planning and Development Department to review proposals for the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2026–27. The chief minister also ordered a structured assessment of heli-tourism to unlock high-value tourism potential in remote and scenic areas.
The meeting reviewed a wide range of initiatives across social welfare, sports, tourism, relief, and transport sectors, aimed at promoting inclusive and sustainable development. Emphasising equitable growth, the CM stated that fair distribution of development dividends across all regions remains a core government responsibility.
Tourism proposals included identification of new destinations, conservation of archaeological heritage, restoration of historic railway stations, and promotion of adventure tourism.
In the social sector, discussions focused on expanding Zamung Kor centres, establishing schools for children with hearing and speech impairments, upgrading Darul Aman facilities, and modernising artificial limb workshops into advanced bionic prosthetics centres. Plans for scholarships and stipends for children with special needs were also reviewed.
The chief minister stressed the importance of completing the province’s Socio-Economic Registry by December, calling it essential for evidence-based policymaking, targeted subsidies, and transparent social protection delivery.
In the transport sector, key proposals included the Kohat-Kharlachi rail service, suburban rail systems, and procurement of double-decker electric buses for tourism. The expansion of the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit fleet with additional electric buses and its extension to Charsadda, Nowshera, and Khyber were also discussed.
Additionally, a targeted mobility initiative for working women and female students through electric scooters was reviewed, alongside plans to establish tehsil-level rescue stations and introduce specialised mine rescue services.
The meeting also considered sports development proposals, including construction of grounds and complexes in Hazara, Malakand, Battagram, and Upper Dir, as well as indoor facilities for women and youth centres.
Concluding the session, the chief minister directed departments to finalise proposals in line with public needs, ground realities, and long-term sustainability goals, positioning the upcoming ADP as a key driver of socio-economic transformation in the province.
