LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) announced on Monday that its hydropower generation exceeded 6,000 megawatts during peak hours on Sunday night following increased water releases by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).

In a statement, Water and Power Development Authority said its hydel power stations supplied 6,118MW electricity to the national grid during peak demand hours after receiving a higher water indent from Indus River System Authority.

According to the breakdown provided by Wapda, the Tarbela Dam Hydel Power Station generated 2,332MW, while the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project contributed 1,095MW.

The Ghazi-Barotha Hydropower Project added 1,160MW to the national grid, followed by the Mangla Dam Hydel Power Station with 930MW, Warsak Hydel Power Station with 135MW, and Chashma Hydel Power Station with 101MW.

Wapda said the remaining 365MW was generated through its medium and small hydropower stations operating across the country.

The authority further stated that its 22 hydel power stations collectively generated 33.12 billion units of electricity during 2025, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the total electricity produced in the national power system.

During the fiscal year 2023-24, Wapda’s hydropower stations supplied 34.436 billion units of electricity to the national grid, marking an increase of 3.266 billion units compared to the previous fiscal year.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the total installed hydropower generation capacity of Wapda’s projects currently stands at 9,459MW.
