## **Govt Removes Nepra Approval Requirement for Rooftop Solar Systems up to 25kW**
**ISLAMABAD:** The Government of Pakistan has eased the approval process for small-scale rooftop solar installations by allowing electricity distribution companies (Discos) to directly approve **grid-connected solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts (kW)**, eliminating the requirement for prior approval from the **National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra)**.
The regulatory change follows amendments to the **Solar Regulations 2026**, under which Nepra has officially authorized the country’s power distribution companies to process and approve eligible rooftop solar applications independently.
Under the revised framework, residential, commercial, and small business consumers planning to install **grid-connected solar systems with a generation capacity of up to 25kW** will no longer be required to obtain separate regulatory clearance from Nepra. Instead, their applications will be reviewed and approved directly by the relevant electricity distribution company.
The policy is expected to significantly simplify the installation process by reducing administrative procedures, paperwork, and approval timelines for small-scale solar consumers.
Industry observers believe the move will accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar across Pakistan by making grid connectivity more accessible and encouraging greater investment in distributed renewable energy systems.
The revised regulations are also expected to support the government’s broader objective of expanding clean energy deployment, improving energy security, and facilitating greater participation of households and small businesses in Pakistan’s renewable energy transition.
