# Iceland Witnesses Rare Total Solar Eclipse
**REYKJAVIK:** Iceland witnessed a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday, as the Moon completely blocked the Sun and plunged parts of the country’s western coast into darkness.
A brief break in the clouds allowed locals and tourists to witness the spectacular celestial event. In Reykjavik, crowds gathered outside Hallgrimskirkja church cheered as the sky suddenly turned dark despite overcast conditions.
Millions of people travelled to Iceland and northern Spain to witness Western Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years. The eclipse was expected to draw up to **6 million visitors** to mostly rural areas along its path across northern Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Spanish authorities, however, urged visitors to exercise caution in areas affected by a heatwave, where elevated temperatures had increased the risk of wildfires.
Spain’s Secretary of State for Science, Juan Cruz, described the event as a unique opportunity to inspire a new generation of scientists and astrophysicists.
The eclipse was particularly spectacular in Spain, where the brief period of totality was followed soon after by sunset, creating an extraordinary combination of celestial and natural phenomena.
