Federal Government’s Fuel Bill Surges 190% in Five Years
The federal government’s expenditure on fuel surged by around 190 percent over the past five years, increasing from Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21 to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.
According to a document presented before Parliament, fuel expenditure by federal ministries, departments and attached institutions rose steadily during the period, with the government attributing the increase primarily to higher fuel prices.
Fuel spending stood at Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21, rising to Rs. 8.35 billion in FY2021-22. It then nearly doubled to Rs. 15.66 billion in FY2022-23.
The expenditure remained almost unchanged at Rs. 15.67 billion in FY2023-24, before climbing sharply to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.
In its response submitted to Parliament, the government stated that the substantial increase in fuel expenditure was mainly due to rising fuel prices. The response did not provide a separate breakdown indicating whether higher fuel consumption also contributed to the increase.
