SYDNEY, Australia: Trinasolar, a global provider of smart solar and energy storage solutions, has been selected to supply solar panels for the first clean energy project at Western Sydney International Airport, which is preparing to open in late 2026. The project features a 4.5 MWp rooftop solar installation delivered by engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Smart Commercial Energy.
The installation comprises 8,824 Trinasolar Vertex S+ 510W (NEG18R.28) modules, installed across the airport’s main terminal roof, both piers and covered car park walkways. The project marks a significant step towards integrating renewable energy into Australia’s major infrastructure.
The solar system is estimated to generate more than 5,800 MWh of clean electricity annually, avoiding approximately 3,712 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Of the total installed capacity, 1.3 MW is located on covered walkway canopies.
Smart Commercial Energy delivered the project in collaboration with electrical contractor Heyday 5 and construction company Multiplex. Given the airport’s operational requirements, the installation involved detailed glare studies to minimise the risk of solar reflections affecting pilots and air traffic control operations.
Edison Zhou, Head of Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands at Trinasolar, said the company was proud to partner with Smart Commercial Energy on another major Australian infrastructure project, building on a relationship spanning more than a decade.
He highlighted the importance of reliability, financial bankability and local after-sales support for EPC contractors, noting that Trinasolar combines established solar technology with dedicated Australian support services.
Ben Adamson, Head of Projects and Performance at Smart Commercial Energy, who led the delivery team, described the installation as one of Australia’s largest airport solar projects and a technically complex undertaking. He said the project team and its partners had successfully completed the work on time and within budget.
Huon Hoogesteger, Managing Director of Smart Commercial Energy, emphasised that renewable energy and world-class infrastructure can be developed together as part of a single project.
The airport installation further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Trinasolar and Smart Commercial Energy. Their previous collaboration includes the Goulburn Community Solar Farm, which received the 2026 Clean Energy Council Community Value and Impact Award.
The project highlights the growing role of solar power in large-scale infrastructure, demonstrating how rooftop and canopy installations can contribute to renewable electricity generation and emissions reduction while meeting the technical requirements of complex facilities.
