As a major energy infrastructure initiative under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Thar Block-1 Integrated Energy Project plays an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s domestic energy resources.
Developed and operated by Shanghai Electric, the integrated project comprises two 660-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power generation units and an open-pit lignite coal mine with an annual production capacity of 7.8 million tonnes.
Using supercritical power generation technology, the project supplies electricity to more than four million households, contributing to national energy security, reducing dependence on imported fuels and helping conserve foreign exchange reserves.
Beyond its contribution to the country’s power sector, Shanghai Electric has continued to undertake community welfare initiatives as part of its broader commitment to social responsibility and local development.
Shanghai Electric, a global supplier of power generation equipment, industrial machinery and energy solutions, aims to combine infrastructure development with community engagement, ensuring that major energy investments also deliver social and economic benefits to surrounding populations.
