ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced the Blue Visa, a special ten-year residency permit tailored for environmental experts.

This initiative, approved by the UAE cabinet, underscores the government’s commitment to environmental conservation. The Blue Visa is aimed at individuals dedicated to environmental improvement through research, advocacy, conservation efforts, and other initiatives. It acknowledges the critical work these professionals do in preserving the natural world.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, announced the Blue Visa on social media, highlighting the essential role of environmental sustainability in securing the future for coming generations. He stated, “The Blue Visa isn’t just a residency permit; it’s a symbol of the UAE’s dedication to environmental protection.”

By offering this visa to exceptional contributors in the field, the UAE aims to attract and retain top talent, fostering innovation and expertise in environmental conservation. This initiative is particularly timely as the Middle East faces unprecedented climate challenges, underscoring the need for collective action to combat environmental degradation.

Previously, UAE residency visas were typically valid for two years. However, with the introduction of the Golden Visa programme in 2019 and the subsequent Green Visa scheme, the UAE has been expanding long-term residency options for investors, entrepreneurs, highly skilled professionals, and now, environmental advocates. Environmentalists working across marine, terrestrial, or atmospheric domains are encouraged to apply for the Blue Visa.
