ISLAMABAD – A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan on Friday emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicle (EV) technology in Pakistan, with a key focus on converting petrol-powered motorcycles to electric.
The meeting brought together senior officials, including Ministry of Industries and Production Secretary Saif Anjum, COMSATS Executive Director Nafees Zakaria, and Engineering Development Board (EDB) CEO Khuda Bakhsh Ali. The participants discussed strategies to fast-track the retrofitting of motorcycles as a means to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Haroon Akhtar cited Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data revealing that approximately 28.7 million motorcycles in the country still run on petrol, contributing significantly to the national fuel bill. He stressed that transitioning to electric bikes would not only reduce fuel consumption but also lower carbon emissions—contributing to environmental sustainability.
He noted that the initiative is in line with the prime minister’s vision of a Green Pakistan, aimed at promoting eco-friendly technologies and sustainable transportation solutions.
