BEIJING – Pakistan plans to launch its first-ever lunar mission by 2035, according to Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal. The national space agency, SUPARCO, has received formal directives to lead this groundbreaking project under the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative.

Speaking during a high-level meeting in Beijing with Shan Zhongde, Chairman of China’s Atomic Energy Authority and Space Agency, Iqbal underscored Pakistan’s commitment to advancing space exploration and technology in collaboration with China. The talks also covered deepening cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy and cutting-edge technologies such as quantum computing.

Iqbal highlighted recent milestones, including the successful launch of three satellites in partnership with China and plans to send the first Pakistani astronaut to the Chinese space station by 2026.

Addressing climate challenges, he stressed the urgent need for alternative energy sources to safeguard food, water, and health security. He also called for expanded Chinese exchange programs to benefit young Pakistani scientists.

Iqbal noted that the K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear plants exemplify the strength of Pakistan-China strategic cooperation, while CPEC continues to play a transformative role in infrastructure and energy development.

Chairman Shan Zhongde lauded Pakistan’s progress under CPEC and reaffirmed China’s full support in enhancing Pakistan’s capabilities in space and nuclear research.
