ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Thursday approved the formation of a special security force dedicated to safeguarding Pakistan’s major dams and hydropower projects. The decision came during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism and securing the nation’s critical infrastructure.
According to an official statement issued by the PM Office, the cabinet granted in-principle approval for legislation to establish the force under the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The move aims to ensure enhanced protection for strategic water and energy assets amid rising security challenges.
The cabinet also ratified the recently signed Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, lauding the leadership of both nations for strengthening bilateral defense ties.
In another decision, the cabinet approved the donation of 15 non-operational aircraft belonging to the Department of Plant Protection to educational institutions and museums for display and training purposes. The remaining four operational aircraft will continue to serve in anti-locust operations. Previous efforts to auction the aircraft had failed, prompting the donation decision.
During the session, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid rich tribute to armed forces personnel who recently embraced martyrdom during anti-terror operations. He warned that facilitators of terrorism crossing from across the border would face decisive action.
“The martyrs have drawn a line with their blood while defending the country — this line cannot be crossed,” the prime minister asserted. “Their sacrifices will forever be remembered. Our economic and diplomatic achievements hold no value unless terrorism is completely eradicated.”
