KARACHI: Pakistan is planning to build three to four new deep-sea ports to support long-term trade and logistics growth, with environmental protection at the core of development policy, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said on Wednesday, according to Arab News.

The initiative aims to ease congestion at existing ports and prepare for future demand as Pakistan seeks a larger role in regional trade routes. The announcement followed a meeting chaired by the minister, who stressed that port planning must balance economic growth with environmental preservation.

“The development of the maritime sector over the next hundred years is a national priority,” Chaudhry said.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs said the government is designing a commercial framework to manage traffic and ensure alternative arrangements before current ports reach full capacity. Mangroves and coastal ecosystems will be safeguarded, while new facilities will integrate green energy solutions and modern digital systems to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Chaudhry added that the new ports will be instrumental in boosting regional trade and logistics, helping Pakistan modernize its maritime infrastructure and strengthen its position as a regional shipping and transit hub.
