ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday called for transparency in load-shedding practices while expressing serious concern over regional water security challenges, including India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Chairing a high-level meeting on water resource management at Aiwan-e-Sadr, the president reviewed key issues related to water availability, governance, and evolving regional dynamics. He termed the alleged “weaponisation” of water a matter of grave concern and stressed the need to safeguard Pakistan’s water rights through diplomatic and legal channels.
Addressing the ongoing energy shortfall, President Zardari directed authorities to minimise load-shedding nationwide. He emphasised that any load management must be conducted in a transparent and pre-announced manner to keep the public informed and reduce inconvenience.
The president also underscored the urgency of water conservation, calling for the rapid implementation of rainwater harvesting at domestic, commercial, and industrial levels. He further directed authorities to expedite the construction of small dams, recharge wells, and water storage infrastructure, describing water conservation as a national priority amid current regional challenges.
The meeting also reviewed broader regional developments, with the president highlighting the importance of stability and expressing confidence that constructive engagement could help navigate the evolving situation involving Iran.
Separately, President Zardari met Nehal Hashmi at Aiwan-e-Sadr and directed him to work closely with the government, as well as social, political, and business stakeholders, to effectively reflect federal priorities in Sindh. The discussion also focused on the overall political situation and the need to ensure improved governance and public welfare across the province.
