PM Shehbaz Sharif Pushes for Accelerated EV Adoption Nationwide

New-EV

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed authorities to fast-track the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country, underscoring their importance for economic and environmental sustainability.

Chairing a high-level review meeting, the premier emphasized that expanding EV usage would significantly reduce Pakistan’s fuel import bill while strengthening energy security and mitigating environmental challenges.

According to an official statement, the prime minister also called for complete transparency in disbursing subsidies for electric motorcycles under the National Electric Vehicle Policy, particularly to ensure that low-income segments fully benefit from the initiative.

Officials briefed the meeting on progress made so far, revealing that 72 certificates have been issued for the manufacturing of electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four licenses have been granted to EV assemblers. Additionally, 123 applications have been submitted for the establishment of EV charging stations nationwide.

The meeting was further informed that the government is planning to transition 30 per cent of the country’s vehicle fleet to electric power, a move expected to save approximately $4.5 billion in fuel imports while advancing Pakistan’s clean energy goals.
