Sindh Announces Fuel Subsidies & Relief Packages as Global Oil Prices Surge

Sharjeel-Inam

Karachi, May 5, 2026 Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, said that escalating tensions between Iran and the US have caused an unprecedented spike in global petroleum prices, impacting people across Sindh and Pakistan.

Addressing the Sindh Assembly, he outlined several relief measures introduced by the provincial government.

He noted that around 6.5 million motorcycles are registered with the Excise Department in Sindh. Under a new scheme, owners who register their motorcycles in their own names will receive a fuel subsidy of Rs 2,000 to help offset rising petrol costs.

Memon added that subsidies have also been extended to the public and goods transport sectors to reduce transportation costs and ease the financial burden on commuters and businesses.

A major relief package for fishermen was also approved in the recent cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Sindh. With diesel prices hitting fishermen hard, financial assistance of up to Rs 100,000 will be provided based on boat size to help sustain their livelihoods.

Additionally, the 5% SRP tax on bike riders has been reduced to 2% to provide further financial relief to those in the sector.

The Sindh government remains committed to supporting all segments of society, including agriculture, business, and fishing communities, and will continue to introduce welfare measures that directly benefit the common man, he said.
