PM Shehbaz Set to Approve National Electric Vehicle Policy Next Week

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to approve the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy next week, paving the way for its final endorsement by the federal cabinet and subsequent implementation.

The Ministry of Industries has finalized the draft NEV policy following extensive consultations with stakeholders and submitted it to the prime minister for approval. The policy targets a major shift toward sustainable transportation, aiming for over 30% of all new vehicles in Pakistan to be electric by 2030.

Key features of the policy include subsidies of Rs50,000 for electric motorcycles and Rs200,000 for electric three-wheelers, such as rickshaws. A total of Rs4 billion has been allocated to support these incentives. The policy also outlines measures to develop EV infrastructure, including the nationwide installation of charging stations.

In a related development, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant, Haroon Akhtar Khan, held a meeting with a delegation from COMSATS to discuss EV technology advancements and motorcycle retrofitting. The session was attended by Secretary of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, COMSATS Executive Director Nafees Zakaria, and EDB CEO Khuda Bakhsh Ali.

Haroon Akhtar emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of EV adoption and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable mobility, aligning with the prime minister’s vision for a greener and more resilient Pakistan.
