LAHORE – In a landmark move to ease the burden of electricity costs, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a reduction of up to 40% in power tariffs for consumers of Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power Pvt Ltd and Punjab Thermal Power Pvt Ltd. Chairing the provincial cabinet meeting on Tuesday, CM Maryam said the relief aims to significantly lower electricity bills and offer maximum respite to the people. Punjab becomes the first province to voluntarily reduce power tariffs.
The cabinet meeting also celebrated the PML-N’s by-election victory in Sambrial, attributing the win to public trust in the CM’s policies. The cabinet extended congratulations to ministers and officials for improvements in hospitals, roads, and rural outreach.
Major announcements included a Rs 400 million grant for the Punjab Journalist Housing Foundation, the launch of Air Punjab Private Ltd, and the rollout of electric buses across nine divisions. The cabinet also approved ration cards for registered workers, new bus shelters, and depots in Lahore.
A sweeping Rs 63 billion wheat subsidy, a Rs 100 billion financing facility for flour mills, and a child protection policy were approved. Landmark health initiatives include the establishment of Pakistan’s first Nawaz Sharif Medical District in Lahore and the Punjab Autism School and Resource Centre Act 2025.
Other key approvals: electric taxi scheme, vaping centre closures, reflective number plates, EV registration, and major amendments in public safety, education, and healthcare laws.
