ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has called for urgent, targeted reforms to safeguard the sustainability of Pakistan’s energy sector while ensuring affordable and reliable electricity for consumers.
Chairing a high-level meeting on Thursday to address the sector’s critical challenges, Dar stressed the need for actionable measures to restore financial health and operational stability. “We must adopt policies that reduce systemic losses, rationalise subsidies, and modernise pricing structures,” he said, emphasising a focus on long-term viability and economic efficiency.
The meeting reviewed key issues, including unsustainable consumption patterns, ineffective subsidy frameworks, outdated tariffs, and persistent transmission and distribution losses, all of which continue to strain the sector’s finances.
Dar directed ministries and departments to submit concrete policy proposals to tackle these inefficiencies, pledging fast-tracked, coordinated action among relevant institutions in line with broader economic recovery goals.
The session was attended by the Minister for Power, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, the National Coordinators on Power Reforms and SIFC, and the Secretaries of Finance and Power, alongside other senior officials.
