Egypt and Qatar Sign MoU to Strengthen LNG Cooperation

CAIRO: Egypt and Qatar have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales and imports, including provisions for delivering Qatari LNG shipments to Egypt’s Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports, the Egyptian Petroleum Ministry announced on Sunday.

According to QatarEnergy, the agreement covers supplying Egypt with up to 24 LNG cargoes during the upcoming summer season.

As the Arab world’s most populous country, Egypt has been working to increase domestic gas production and diversify import sources to meet rising energy demand. Gas production began declining in late 2022, which has affected Egypt’s ambitions to become a regional supply hub and prompted plans for additional imports from Israel and Cyprus, alongside higher-cost LNG shipments.

Data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative shows that Egypt produced 3,635 million cubic meters of gas in October 2025, slightly up from 3,525 million cubic meters in September but down from 3,851 million cubic meters in October 2024.

Despite the production drop, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi said last week that Egypt is committed to achieving self-sufficiency in oil and gas, according to a cabinet statement.
