ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with India remains fully operational, a stance endorsed by the Hague-based Court of Arbitration (CoA). This comes after India claimed the treaty was put in abeyance.

Secretary Ministry of Water Resources Syed Ali Murtaza stated that Pakistan’s position has been supported by the CoA, which affirms the treaty’s effectiveness and India’s obligations. The treaty covers hydropower matters, with the Indus Water Commission currently operating under an additional charge due to a vacant commissioner post.

The Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources highlighted concerns over climate change, encroachments, and infrastructure issues impacting water management. It called for coordinated action to clear waterways, enforce zoning laws, and address staffing gaps in the Ministry.

The committee also emphasized the need for sustainable groundwater management, stricter regulations, and technological measures to enhance water security.
