Rehabilitated Incineration Plant in Mewa Shah Now Disposing 18 Tons of Medical Waste Daily

Murtaza-Wahab

Karachi: In a major step towards strengthening environmental protection and public health safeguards in the city, Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the rehabilitated incineration plant of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) at the Trans Lyari Site Area in Karachi.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by members of the KMC City Council, elected representatives, and senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Wahab said the incineration plant, equipped with modern technology, is now fully operational and will provide an effective and environmentally responsible system for the safe disposal of medical waste in the metropolis.

He highlighted that the upgraded facility incorporates advanced cyclone technology designed to significantly reduce smoke emissions and control environmental pollution. The dual-chamber incineration system operates at temperatures reaching up to 1,200 degrees Celsius, ensuring the complete and safe destruction of hazardous and infectious waste.

The plant now has the capacity to safely dispose of up to 18 tons of medical waste daily. Additionally, a carbon monoxide dilution system has been installed to minimize the release of harmful gases, further enhancing environmental compliance standards.

Mayor Wahab informed that the comprehensive rehabilitation of both the plant and its building structure was completed in less than one year. Providing historical context, he stated that KMC had originally purchased two high-capacity incinerators in 1995, which were installed at the Mewa Shah site in 1998. The facility later operated under a public-private partnership arrangement starting in 2001.

According to the Mayor, Karachi generates between 50 to 100 tons of medical waste each day. He stressed that hospitals and industrial units will be strictly required to ensure proper disposal of hazardous waste. The city administration, he warned, will take firm legal action against illegal recycling, unsafe dumping, or the sale of hazardous medical materials.

The rehabilitation of the Mewa Shah incineration facility marks a significant development in Karachi’s waste management infrastructure and is expected to play a vital role in improving environmental safety, public health standards, and regulatory enforcement across the city.
