Nationwide Heatwave Alert Issued as NDMA Activates Emergency Protocols

NDMA-Alert

RAWALPINDI: The National Disaster Management Authority has issued comprehensive emergency protocols and placed hospitals on high alert as extreme, above-normal temperatures threaten millions across Pakistan.

According to the NDMA’s Early Warning Team, daytime temperatures are expected to remain significantly above normal throughout May and June. All relevant stakeholders — including provincial authorities, rescue agencies, health departments, and federal institutions — have been directed to implement immediate precautionary and response measures.

In Karachi, temperatures surged beyond 44°C, marking the hottest day of the year, as reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The intense heat has compounded challenges for residents already facing water shortages and power outages linked to load management by K-Electric.

The NDMA has instructed provincial and district disaster management authorities to launch public awareness campaigns on heatwave risks and preventive measures. Schools have been advised to adjust schedules or consider temporary closures to protect children from extreme conditions.

Authorities have also been directed to establish heatstroke treatment centres equipped with medical staff, essential supplies, and clean drinking water. The Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination has been asked to enhance hospital capacity to manage heat-related emergencies.

Special focus has been placed on vulnerable regions, including glaciated areas in northern Pakistan, where rising temperatures could trigger glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Emergency services and forest departments have also been put on alert to prevent urban and forest fires.

Additionally, departments have been instructed to stockpile emergency supplies such as oral rehydration salts, electrolyte solutions, and first aid kits, while setting up control rooms for coordinated response efforts.

Citizens have been urged to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours (10am to 5pm), and wearing light, protective clothing. In case of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or weakness, immediate medical attention is advised.
