Petroleum Minister Defends Fuel Pricing Policy, Says Government Treating All Sectors Equally

Ali-Pervaiz

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has defended the government’s petroleum pricing mechanism, reiterating that no sector is being favoured and that any relief from declining international oil prices will be passed on to consumers while adhering to Pakistan’s international commitments.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Saturday, the minister shared the latest international Platts benchmark prices for petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), highlighting continued fluctuations in global refined fuel markets. According to the data, petrol prices ranged between $90.36 and $98.35 per barrel during June 22-26, while HSD prices fluctuated between $104.79 and $109.09 per barrel.

“Please see the international Platts prices for petrol and diesel for this week,” Malik wrote. “The government is neither favouring any sector nor placing an unnecessary burden on another.”

He emphasized that the government remains committed to providing maximum possible relief to consumers, provided it remains within the framework of Pakistan’s international obligations.

“The government remains committed to passing on any benefit to consumers while remaining within the ambit of its international obligations,” he added.

Highlighting the government’s record on fuel price adjustments, the petroleum minister said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration has so far reduced the price of high-speed diesel by Rs200 per litre and petrol by Rs155 per litre since assuming office.

The minister’s remarks came a day after the federal government announced that petroleum product prices would remain unchanged until further notice.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) on Friday, the price of Motor Spirit (petrol) will remain at Rs299.50 per litre, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) will continue to be sold at Rs311.47 per litre.
