Thar Coal Power Strengthens Pakistan’s Energy Security, Says Sharjeel Memon
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that electricity generation from Thar coal is playing an important role in meeting Pakistan’s growing energy requirements and represents a significant economic development for the country.
Speaking about the Thar coal power initiative, Memon said the project was the result of sustained efforts by successive governments of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He noted that President Asif Ali Zardari played an important role in advancing the Thar coal project, while former Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and incumbent Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also worked extensively for its development.
According to Memon, Thar coal is now contributing to the generation of more than 3,500 megawatts of electricity, making it an increasingly important component of Pakistan’s power sector.
He said the entire country’s attention was focused on the potential of Thar coal, adding that the resource could help Pakistan meet its domestic energy requirements while also creating the potential for coal exports in the future.
Memon described Thar coal-based power generation as a major economic opportunity for Pakistan, saying the project could become a foundation for broader economic development.
He emphasized that continued development of Thar’s coal resources and power-generation capacity could strengthen Pakistan’s energy security, reduce dependence on imported energy resources and support the country’s long-term economic growth.
