ISLAMABAD: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday as part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to promote peace and security in the region, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said.
According to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Field Marshal Munir will lead an official Pakistani delegation during the visit. He is scheduled to meet senior Iranian officials for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and supporting regional peace efforts.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions surrounding Iran and the United States, with Washington preparing to announce new sanctions against Tehran. US officials have described the planned measures as potentially among the toughest sanctions imposed on Iran.
The situation has also raised concerns over oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy transit route. Tehran has warned against unauthorised tanker movements through the waterway, while Iran’s economy continues to face significant pressure from international sanctions.
Pakistan has played an active role in diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States. Islamabad previously facilitated a ceasefire and hosted direct talks between the two sides, while subsequent mediation efforts contributed to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Geneva in June.
Despite renewed hostilities, Pakistan has continued its diplomatic engagement. Field Marshal Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi have undertaken several visits to Iran in recent months as part of Islamabad’s efforts to support dialogue and regional stability.
