KARACHI: The Sindh government’s Transport Department has decided to seek approval from the provincial cabinet for the establishment of a logistics park and procurement of 500 electric buses as part of efforts to expand the mass transit network and promote modern, environment-friendly public transport across the province.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Board chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday.
The meeting reviewed various matters related to the expansion of the mass transit system, promotion of modern and sustainable public transport, establishment of the proposed logistics park and procurement of 500 electric vehicle (EV) buses.
SMTA Board members, Sindh Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, SMTA Managing Director Behzad Memon, Traffic DIG Pir Muhammad Shah and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The participants discussed administrative, technical and operational matters concerning the transport sector, progress on ongoing mass transit projects, traffic management and measures to provide modern and efficient travelling facilities to citizens.
Procedures to be completed before cabinet approval
The meeting decided that all necessary technical and administrative procedures for establishing the logistics park and procuring the 500 EV buses would be completed before the proposals are submitted to the Sindh cabinet for approval.
Various proposals concerning ongoing and future transport projects, along with measures to improve public travelling facilities, were also considered.
Speaking at the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon termed the proposed logistics park a revolutionary initiative for Karachi, saying it would help significantly reduce the pressure of heavy traffic on the city’s roads.
The transport minister directed the relevant authorities to complete the required technical and administrative formalities at the earliest.
He said further expansion of the modern public transport system was among the Sindh government’s key priorities, with greater emphasis on environment-friendly and efficient transportation solutions.
